  • Comparing Race/Ethnicity Between the 2000 Census and Earlier Censuses
By allowing respondents the option of marking one or more racial categories, the data provided by the 2000 Census is not directly comparable to the race/ethnicity data from earlier censuses. This section offers a discussion of this issue and options for categorizing current data to be roughly compatible with racial and ethnic groups utilized in earlier decades.
