Texas Population Estimates Program

The Texas Population Estimates Program produces annual estimates of the total populations of counties and places in the state and estimates of county populations by age, sex, and race/ethnicity.


Population Estimate Methodology

The program utilizes an average of three methods for counties:

  • Ratio-correlation with births, deaths, school enrollment, voter registration, and vehicle registration.
  • Component-Method II
  • Housing Unit Method (four types - single family, 2-4 unit, 5+ units, mobile homes)

and an average of two methods for places:

  • Component-Method II
  • Housing Unit Method

Estimation Products

  • County, Place, Metropolitan Statistical Areas, and Council of Governments total population estimates delivered each year
  • County age, sex by race/ethnicity estimates delivered each year
  • Estimates for the entire State
