Texas Shapefiles

2009 TIGER/Line® Shapefiles
  • Extracts containing geographic and cartographic information from the Census Bureau's MAF/TIGER® (Master Address File/Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) database.
  • The files provide the digital map base for a Geographic Information System or mapping software. The files do not contain any mapping software.
  • They include spatial data for geographic features such as roads, railroads, rivers, and lakes, as well as legal and statistical geographic areas.
  • The geographic entity codes needed to link the Census Bureau's demographic data to the geography are included in the files. The TIGER/Line Shapefiles do not contain any demographic data; it must be downloaded separately.
  • Metadata in Extensible Markup Language (XML) format is included with each compressed file.

  • State Shapefiles
These files consist of one .zip file for each shapefile for the entire state. For example, the tl_2009_48_place00.zip file contains the layer for the Census 2000 Place polygons for the State of Texas.
  • County Shapefiles
These files consist of one .zip file for all shapefiles within a county. For example, the 48201_Harris.zip file contains all layers for Harris county.

2008 TIGER/Line® Shapefiles
The TIGER/Line Shapefiles are extracts containing selected geographic and cartographic information from the Census Bureau's MAF/TIGER® (Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) database. The MAF/TIGER database was developed at the Census Bureau to support a variety of geographic programs and operations including functions such as mapping, geocoding, and geographic reference files that are used in decennial and economic censuses and sample survey programs. Spatial data for geographic features such as roads, railroads, rivers, and lakes, as well as legal and statistical geographic areas are included in the product. Other information about these features, such as the name, the type of feature, address ranges, and the geographic relationship to other features, also are included. The TIGER/Line Shapefiles are made available to the public for no charge and are typically used to provide the digital map base for a Geographic Information System or for mapping software.

The 2008 TIGER/Line Shapefiles contain current geographic areas (boundaries of governmental units as of January 1, 2008), Census 2000 vintage geography, and Economic Census geography. The shapefiles also contain some additional feature updates reported in the Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS). All counties have now been realigned as a result of the MAF/TIGER Accuracy Improvement Project (MTAIP) and are included in the 2008 TIGER/Line Shapefiles. For more information about the MTAIP please refer to the 2008 TIGER/Line Shapefile Technical Documentation available in [PDF] or TEXT.

More detailed information on the 2008 TIGER/Line® Shapefiles can be found at http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/tgrshp2008/tgrshp2008.html.

State Shapefiles
These files consist of one .zip file for each shapefile for the entire state. For example, the tl_2008_48_place00.zip file contains the layer for the Census 2000 Place polygons for the State of Texas.
County Shapefiles
These files consist of one .zip file for all shapefiles within a county. For example, the 48201_Harris.zip file contains all layers for Harris county.

Metadata Notes
The 2008 TIGER/Line metadata in Extensible Markup Language (XML) format is included with each compressed TIGER/Line Shapefile.

The Spatial Metadata Identifier (SMID) in the All Lines shapefile identifies the source of the coordinates for each line segment and provides the link between the TIGER/Line Shapefile and the source and horizontal spatial accuracy information. Please note that the horizontal spatial accuracy, where reported in the metadata, refers to the realigned street features identified as matched to a positionally accurate source file with that accuracy. Individual feature-based horizontal spatial accuracy does not apply to the entirety of the TIGER/Line Shapefile.

If you need further information concerning the content of the TIGER/Line Shapefiles, please contact the Geographic Products Branch, Geography Division at geo.tiger@census.gov. The telephone number is (301) 763-1128.

2007 TIGER/Line® Shapefiles

State Shapefiles
These files consist of one .zip file for each shapefile for the entire state. For example, the fe_2007_48_place00.zip file contains the layer for the Census 2000 Place polygons for the State of Texas.
County Shapefiles
These files consist of one .zip file for all shapefiles within a county. For example, the 48201_Harris.zip file contains all layers for Harris county.

Metadata Notes
The 2007 TIGER/Line metadata in Extensible Markup Language (XML) format is included with each compressed TIGER/Line Shapefile.

The North American Datum of 1983 was used in the 48 contiguous states, the District of Columbia, Alaska, Hawaii, (only Oahu Island within Honolulu County, HI (15003)), Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands of the United States, and the Pacific Island Areas. Even though a NAD83 PRJ file will accompany every TIGER/Line Shapefile, there are a few island areas in TIGER that have not gone through the NAD83 transformation process and are still in local astronomic datums. For detailed information regarding these exceptions please refer to the metadata that is included with each TIGER/Line Shapefile.

If you need further information concerning the content of the TIGER/Line Shapefiles, please contact the Geographic Products Branch, Geography Division at geo.tiger@census.gov. The telephone number is (301) 763-1128.

Shapefiles from 108th Congressional District Census 2000 TIGER/Line® Files
Metadata for the 108th CD Census TIGER/Line® Files can be found at http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tlmetadata/tl108cdmeta.txt.
State Shapefiles
These files consist of one .zip file for each shapefile for the entire state. For example, the blocks00.zip file contains the layer for the Census 2000 Blocks polygons for the State of Texas.
County Shapefiles
These files consist of one .zip file for all shapefiles within a county. For example, the TGR48201.zip file contains all layers for Harris county.
These shapefiles were converted from the TIGER/Line®-Files using the TGR2SHP program available for free download from here. Please refer to the TGR2SHP User's Manual  for further information.

Projections and Metadata
The original TIGER/Line data are not in a mapping projection even though most of the features were scanned directly from source maps that were in a projection. The North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83) is the coordinate datum used for the 48 contiguous states, the District of Columbia, Alaska, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands of the United States. A North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83) projection has been defined for the State- and County-level shapefiles. A projection file is now included with the State- and County-level shapefiles.

U.S. Census Bureau Cartographic Boundary Files
Generalized shapefiles suitable for use with a Geographic Information System (G.I.S.) as a base for medium to small-scale thematic mapping.
